Book Notes: Without Regret, Louise Hoffman and Shush Masel

Edgar Samuel

<plain_text><page sequence="1">Book Notes Without Regret, edited by Louise Hoffman and Shush Masel (Center for Migration and Development Studies, University of Western Australia, 1994) ISBN 0-646-16669-7. 400 pp. This is a fine example of the technique of recording oral history. Twenty-eight senior members of the Perth Jewish community have been interviewed. Their experiences were varied: there was considerable migration from Palestine to Perth, especially from Safed in the 1920s, and several interviewees were refugees from Nazi Germany and Austria and one from Fascist Italy. Many Holocaust survivors eventually settled in Perth and their reminiscences of Poland, Hungary and The Netherlands under the Nazi regime make this an important historical record.
