The Myth of the Jewish Pirate

Over the past few years an industry has grown up around the myth of the Jewish Pirate. There has been an exhibition in Marseille; a book called Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean; there are guided tours in Jamaica, and Jewish speakers regularly give talks on the subject.
Yet there is massive misinformation, sloppy research, and much copying and pasting without any questioning. In one case so called fact comes from a children’s book, and in another from a tourist guide. It is important to explode the myth, as well as to restore to our attention three amazing individuals that Jewish history has forgotten – without the false tag of piracy. Tony’s talk will do just that, as well as asking us to disavow fake history.
Tony Zendle is an experienced speaker, giving talks on a range of subjects to a number of groups including Limmud. He has written three books: “The Definitive Guide to Jewish Miscellany and Trivia”, “Jews and the Sea”, and “Kosher Foxtrot” He is a member of the JHSE.
