E Moses & Son – Pioneers in the East End

Tuesday, 22 February 2022 | 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

E Moses & Son were probably the best known Jewish business in Victorian London. They were major innovators in the clothing and textiles trades and were in many ways the precursors of Marks and Spencer. They were also precursors of the department store and had four branches in London and two outside the capital. However, in their heyday, they supplied the entire British Empire.

David Barnett lives in Billericay, Essex. He retired in 1991 as Director General (chief executive) of the Road Transport Industry Training Board. After retirement, he studied for a PhD at the University of Nottingham and wrote a book, London: Hub of the Industrial Revolution based on his research, which was published in 1998. For many years, he has been giving talks on both London in general, and particularly the Jewish London, of the last 250 years. In 2019 he published Diverse Lives: Portraits of Jewish Londoners, 1764-1964 based on his talks.
