About the event
The Zion Mule Corps has been described as the first regular Jewish fighting force to take an active part in a war since the Bar Kochba revolt in 132 BC. Many of them formed the core of the modern Israel Army. The Corps not only had to contend with the Turks and cynicism about an 'alien' force fighting as part of the British Army but with often profound antisemitism amongst the higher ranks of the Army.
Robert Bieber MBE is a retired charity solicitor and a Visiting Research Fellow of the Department of War Studies at King's College London.
