About the event
The siege of Sidney Street in Stepney in 1911 caused a sensation. Latvian anarchist gunmen who were wanted for the murder of three London police officers held out for six hours against armed police and troops. The fierce controversy provoked by the incident touched on issues which are depressingly topical: immigration, asylum and antisemitism. Our speaker, Andrew Whitehead, is an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham and the author of a new book, A Devilish Kind of Courage: Anarchists, Aliens and the Siege of Sidney Street.
