About the event

The French Revolution eventually led to the political emancipation of Jews in France, the embrace of the concept of equality before the law, Napoleon’s destruction of European ghettos and his calling of the Sanhedrin. Set against this background, how did Anglo-Jewry react to doubts in England over its loyalty?

Dr Jeremy Smilg read Economics at the London School of Economics. After a career in the City, he returned to his true academic love, and was awarded a Master of Research degree in Jewish History and Culture and a doctorate by the University of Southampton’s Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish relations.
