Salonica: The Rise and Fall of a Jewish City
Tue, 26 Nov
|Zoom only
Dr. Hilary Pomeroy discusses this important Sephardi Jewish community which made up half of the city's population at the turn of the 20th century but was almost totally destroyed in the Holocaust

Time & Location
26 Nov 2024, 19:30 – 20:30
Zoom only
About the event
Within decades of their expulsion from Spain, Sephardi Jews dominated Salonica’s commercial life and Sephardi culture flourished. At the turn of the 20th century, half of the city’s population was Jewish, the port shut on Saturdays and Ladino was widely spoken even by non-Jews. However, the situation changed dramatically after the city was incorporated into Greece following the almost total destruction of Salonica’s Jews during the Holocaust.
We welcome Dr Hilary Pomeroy, from UCL Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, where she taught Sephardi History and Culture, and has a particular interest in Ladino culture. This talk will take place on Zoom only via the JHSE website at JHSE.org and is free to JHSE members and students. There is a charge of £5 for non-members.
We very much look forward to welcoming you on Zoom to this event.
