About the event

This talk will explore Jews and Christians as neighbours in the towns of medieval England. Focusing particularly on the evidence from medieval Colchester, it will explore how the two communities interacted, collaborated, and co-operated with each other. It will focus, in particularly upon the charter sources from the Colchester, housed in Westminster Abbey, as well as a case in the 1277 Essex Forest Roll which relates a case from a decade which witnessed a doe running through the town. As a result, it will be possible to give a more nuanced discussion of Jewish-Christian relations than is generally the case.


Dean Irwin is a medieval historian who works on the records generated by, or in relation to, the Jews of medieval England. My doctoral work focused on acknowledgements of debt (1194-1276).
