About the event

On Sunday 15 April 1945 the British Army entered Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp. Nothing had or could have prepared the soldiers for what they found themselves called upon to deal with. The conditions were indescribable, with thousands of dead people barely distinguishable from the thousands of the nearly dead, many of whom were to die during the first weeks of liberation. One officer wrote that “three thousand British troops were faced with a problem in mental and moral reconditioning which might have defeated an equal number of psychiatric experts.”

Captain Reverend Leslie Hardman entered the camp on the second day and Major Reverend Isaac Levy on the eighth. Over some two years nine Jewish as well as some thirty non-Jewish chaplains served for varying periods at Belsen.
