False Murder Accusation in Norwich
Tue, 06 Jun
|Loughton Synagogue
Hybrid event, online and in-person
Time & Location
06 Jun 2023, 20:00
Loughton Synagogue , Borders Ln, Loughton IG10 1TE, UK
About the event
While the tension between Jews and Christians, Judaism and Christianity goes back to the earliest writings of Christians, the gospel, throughout the Middle Ages a series of new accusations against Jews were born. These received some currency and continued to influence ideas and representations of Jews in later centuries.
While many have heard of the ritual murder accusations against Jews, few know that the story that linked Jews and ill intent towards Christain children was first told in Norwich c. 1150.
In this talk, Professor Miri Rubin, President of the JHSE, will set the scene, share texts and images and explain how a nasty new narrative was born, and what its consequences were.
