The first note struck by the President of a Society such as ours, on an occasion such as this, must be one of gratification ; no man can stand before the members of the Jewish Historical Society of England as the elected President without attempting to express his sense of pride in the honour. The joy of the exalted office to which you have elevated me is something difficult to express in words ; but the memory of your confidence and kindness is something that will abide with me as long as the power of memory will last.
